Membership to Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation #

Eligibility #

To apply for membership with Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation, you must check the eligibility criteria in the NAC Rulebook and submit a completed Membership Application kit below.

To be eligible for membership with Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation you must be 18+ years of age, complete a written application for membership and you must and be a member of the Ngarlawangga People (as defined in the Rulebook). When completing your application, you must nominate which apical ancestor you come from to provide details of your connection, provide a copy of your Birth Certificate, and complete a Community Ratification deed.

Definition of Ngarlawangga People

The Ngarlawangga People are those persons who:

(a) are descended from, in accordance with the traditional laws
acknowledged and the traditional customs observed by the
Ngarlawangga People:

  • i. Kanpanta;
  • ii. Jilwilingpa;
  • iii. Partatalpu (Maggie);
  • iv. Kuntiri (Topsy Coony);
  • v. Mulunu (Piper);
  • vi. Laripangu;
  • vii. Jimmy Tumbler
  • viii. Mirruru (Kitty);
  • ix. Kujamurra (Standard); and
  • x. Kurnipa/Annie

or are adopted by such biological descendants in accordance with
the traditional customs observed by the Ngarlawangga People;

(b) identify themselves as Ngarlawangga under traditional law and
custom and are accepted in accordance with the traditional laws
acknowledged and the traditional customs observed by other
Ngarlawangga People as Ngarlawangga; and

(c) have a connection with the land and waters of the Determination
area, in accordance with the traditional laws acknowledged and the
traditional customs observed by the Ngarlawangga People.

What Membership entitles you to #

All Members of Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation have rights and responsibilities as Members.

Some of these rights and responsibilities include:

  • The right to attend, speak and vote at meetings of the Corporation
  • To be elected or appointed as a Director of the Corporation (if eligible)
  • The right to inspect registers and members meetings minutes
  • To comply with the Ngarlawangga Rulebook
  • To notify the Corporation of any change in address details within 28 days
  • To comply with Ngarlawangga Code of Conduct
  • To treat other Members with respect and dignity
  • To not behave in a way that significantly interferes with the operation of the Corporation and Corporation meetings.

Members of the Corporation are not automatically Beneficiaries of the Trust. In order to access programs and benefits from the Trust, you must apply to become a Beneficiary of the Trust.

Our Application Review Process #

Membership Applications are reviewed by the Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation Board of Directors.

Beneficiary Status Applications are reviewed by the Ngarlawangga Decision Making Committee.

Deciding Membership Applications #

The Ngarlawangga Board of Directors review completed membership application forms in line with rulebook requirements at the board of directors' meetings.

Under rule 5.1.3(b) of the Ngarlawangga Rulebook, the Directors may consult with the Representative Council when considering and deciding membership applications and make take into account any other information they consider to be relevant, such as anthropological advice.

On request of the Board, The Ngarlawangga Council of Elders can make recommendations to the board and provide guidance to the Directors on a variety of matters such as Law and Custom and Identification of the Ngarlawangga.

Once an outcome is reached by the Directors, applicants will be notified of the decision in writing shortly after the meeting.
